ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Placing a bet on sporting events is just a tap away.

Legalized mobile sports betting went statewide Saturday morning, giving apps like FanDuel and DraftKings the green light.

But with gambling now more accessible, some worry this could cause issues for many New Yorkers.

“It's right at your fingertips,” said Jenna Hotaling from the Finger Lakes Problem Gambling Resource Center. “Everyone is on their phone nowadays. It just makes it that much easier to pick up your phone and place a bet."

Staff at the Finger Lakes Problem Gambling Resource Center say they are already seeing an increase in calls related to sports gambling. They say having access to the apps is enticing for people, especially the younger crowd.

“It’s something that if you increase availability and accessibility, you’re bound to increase the problems,” Hotaling said.

But staff have been preparing for those increased issues ahead of the rollout for mobile sports betting.

If you think you have a problem, they say the first step is just reaching out.

“You won’t get transferred or cold called,” Hotaling explained. "You have someone on the other end that wants to help you and walk you through every step.”

At the end of the day, staff members just want people struggling with addiction to know it’s OK to ask for help.
