ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Homeowners and businesses are still dealing with damage from the high water levels on Lake Ontario in 2017 and 2019.

Officials held a groundbreaking at Sutter’s Marina Wednesday for a project they hope will help the marina withstand floodwaters.

A new operating building will hold an office space, a small supply shop and improvements to fortify the fuel pump dock.

"The flooding in 2017 and 2019 not only destroyed homes and property, it damaged many waterfront businesses and restricted access to boating and other water recreation,” Monroe County Executive Adam Bello said in a statement. “These improvements will help protect Sutter’s Marina from flooding, and ensure it can remain part of the strong, economic driver that is our waterfront business community. Thank you to Gov. Kathy Hochul, and the REDI Commission, for helping make these improvements possible.”

The project is part of the state's Lake Ontario Resiliency and Economic Development Initiative.

Sutter's Marina will be celebrating its 50th anniversary next summer.
