Rochester is ready to celebrate Susan B. Anthony's 200th birthday. It will also mark the centennial of the 19th Amendment in 2020.

It will be a yearlong celebration as the City of Rochester works closely with the Susan B. Anthony House and Museum to host several events marking her 200th birthday next month.

The new anniversary logo was unveiled during an event at Rochester City Hall on Thursday. It will be used on banners and signage throughout the year.

Two years ago the mayor said we recognized the 200th birthday of Frederick Douglass, and now it's time to pay tribute to Susan B. Anthony.

Organizers say there are several activities taking place and 2020 will be a special year for women.

"Susan B. Anthony's work is not a conversation about the past. It is very much relevant in the conversation about the present. And Susan B. Anthony and women like her and men like her have a vision for a democracy that we've not yet accomplished. And so we see 2020, not just as a grand celebration, but as a challenge," said Deborah Hughes, president of the Susan B. Anthony House.

Some key events include:

  • Celebration birthday dinner in February
  • Big parade in September
  • Time to explore history
  • And recognizing that when Susan B. Anthony needed energy and renewal, she would return to her home in Rochester

Anthony was a women's rights activist who played a pivital role in the women's suffrage movement. She is buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Rochester.
