People across the nation came together Saturday to honor veterans in each military branch, prisoners of war and those still missing in action at more than 1,400 ceremonies.

The servicemembers were honored by laying down seven wreaths, each one decorated with a red bow and American flag. One of this year's "Wreaths Across America" ceremonies took place in front of Gates Town Hall.

"It gives us an opportunity to pause during the holiday season and remember families who don't have a loved one coming home, whether it's because they served and passed away or are still deployed somewhere and will not be home for the holidays," said Gates resident, Kathy Armstrong. "Also, it gives us a wonderful opportunity to teach other people and remind them about the cost of freedom."

The wreath-laying coincided with the main event at Arlington National Cemetery.
