GENEVA, N.Y. — Sun-baked scrambled eggs? It's happening at Geneva High School where some students are learning how to repurpose discarded materials into tools for solar cooking.

Kids there are using things like old satellite dishes to make solar ovens.

Seneca Meadows Landfill in Waterloo is helping the school's World of Technology class solve real-world problems when it comes to cooking in regions that do not have power.

The landfill gave the school old satellite dishes and lenses from projection TVs so students can turn them into solar ovens by adding some cardboard, screens and reflective tape.

The students say on sunny days these homemade ovens reached up to 1000 degrees — maybe too hot for cookies, but so far students have successfully cooked eggs, hot dogs and even baked bread.

A little math, science and creativity paved the way for these kids to come up with a recipe for sun-cooked food.
