ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A local woman is thanking a Rochester police officer for a good deed.

“He didn’t ask any questions or nothing he just grabbed the broom and just went to sweeping,” said Thelma Cartledge of Rochester.

Officer Jim Laruez was on routine patrol of his beat when he noticed 82-year-old Thelma Cartledge sweeping the snow off her porch.

Laruez pulled over and finished cleaning the rest of the porch.

Cartledge says she was surprised when Officer Laruez came back a few days later with a brand new sweeper for her porch.

“On a daily basis, we get chances to be not only in a high crisis situation with people but also it`s a chance to be kind to somebody and when you`re kind to somebody over time, it builds up. It`s just the right thing to do,” said Laruez.

“When he got through, I hugged him and gave him a kiss on his little jaw and he was so happy that he was able to do something good for me,” said Cartledge.

Cartledge says she is not only thankful for Officer Laruez, but she is looking forward to him stopping by to help during the winter.
