Week seven is rivalry week in Section VI. This week’s Spectrum Game of the Week features Williamsville South traveling four miles down the road to Williamsville East.

With the Billies entering Friday at 2-4 and the Flames coming in at 3-3, neither team is expected to make the Class A playoffs. That makes Friday’s rivalry even more important, especially for the seniors on both squads who will be suiting up for one of their final games of their high school careers.

“Our seniors are good guys,” said South head coach Kraig Kurzanski. “They work hard, they do all of the good things that are supposed to happen and I want them to get rewarded for that six years of work.”

The close nature of the two schools makes them natural rivals. However, the “rivalry” does not necessarily mean bad blood between the two.

Not all of Battaglia’s teammates share the same warm feelings.

“I’m looking forward to putting the guy across from me in the dirt,” said South senior guard Evan Ruch.

Williamsville East, like their South opponents, view Friday as their biggest game of the season. East has the additional pressure of defending their home field after traveling to South last season and stealing a victory from the Billies on opening night.

“South's the biggest game of the year probably for these guys,” said Flames head coach Mike Torrillo. “We play North but South being the similar size school as us, I think the kids really get excited for this one.”

The kids are excited for this one, the final home game of the Flames senior’s careers.

Coverage of the rivalry matchup can begins Friday at 7 pm on Spectrum News.
