Nearly $6 million is set to help keep the water clean in Chautauqua County.

A $5.9 million grant from New York’s Water Infrastructure Act will be split between two projects across the county.

The northern part of the county will receive $3 million to connect the village of Fredonia with the main water transmission line in Sheridan and the storage tank in Dunkirk.

The rest of the grant will begin the process of extending existing sewer lines to the west side of Chautauqua Lake in the central and southern portion of the county, allowing for the creation of public sewers to replace septic systems.

This should reduce the amount of waste entering the lake and, as a result, the number of algae blooms.
