The now-retired police chief for the village of Kenmore has pleaded guilty to possession of hydrocodone.

Peter Breitnauer appeared in federal court Thursday.

His attorney says it's a misdemeanor charge and he could receive what the law calls "special probation" if he stays clean.

Breitnauer was arrested back in October at Kenmore Police headquarters.

Prosecutors say he took prescription pills from the state medication drop box and admitted to taking the pills for his own use to support his addiction.

He now faces a maximum of one year and a $100,000 fine.

He is scheduled to be sentenced in April.
