A bill with new requirements to drive recreational motorboats in New York state is now in the hands of Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Known as Brianna's Law, it would require that all people driving a boat have to pass a safety course.

Right now, that's only needed for people born after May 1, 1996 or if operating a jet ski.

The law is named after an 11-year-old girl who died in a boating accident in 2005.

State Sen. Bob Antonacci (50^th District) understands the importance of applying similar laws to boating that already apply to flying, but he voted against the proposal because of potential unintended consequences.

"There was, you know, real concern in the Senate with the law in terms of hurting, potentially hurting the tourism industry because we don't want somebody coming in renting, that can't rent a boat because they didn't take the course,” Antonacci said. “It's still going to need to be worked on.  There's going to be some input from the various state departments."

Antonacci is reminding people that with or without a boating safety course, it's important to make good decisions on the water, and that means not drinking while operating a boat.
