Born in 1909, Ruth Grant never thought she would live this long. She's seen both world wars, lived through women's suffrage, the civil rights movement, and the dawn of the digital age.

"I had a very good life," says Grant.

The New York native grew up just outside Plattsburgh and went to school to become a teacher. She taught in Sullivan County and would become the secretary for the Superintendent of Liberty Schools until her retirement in 1970.

She now lives at the Care Center at Sunset Lake, and her energy and independence continues to surprise the staff.

"Well, for someone who's 111, she is doing a lot better than some who are much younger than her. You really wouldn't be able to tell that she's 111," said Santa Ocasio, RN unit leader at the Care Center.

So what's her secret to living this long?

"Oh, I could eat everything chocolate," Grant said.
