A Middletown store owner and his son-in-law are facing welfare fraud charges after a lengthy investigation.

State Police say 59-year-old Ahsan Chaudhry and 24-year-old Ammar Ahmad let people trade their EBT cards for cash — at a fraction of the value — then used that money to purchase items to stock the store.

Troopers say they monitored Sam's Mart on Academy Avenue this November and December, before executing a search warrant on Wednesday.

Chaudhry is facing several felony counts, while Ahamad was arraigned on two misdemeanors.
