The city of Newburgh says elevated levels of lead have been found in some homes and businesses — this according to the water department's third annual monitoring tests.

The city says the main sources — the Catskill aqueduct and the brown's pond — are both clear from any lead levels. Newburgh officials are currently working with ESC Environmental for water treatments that can help bring the levels down.

Lead can be dangerous, especially for pregnant women and children, and is linked to brain and kidney damage. Newburgh officials do recommend some steps to reduce your chance of exposure.

  • Run your water to flush out lead for 13-30 seconds before drinking
  • Use cold water for cooking and preparing baby formula
  • Use bottled water or use a water filter
  • Replace your plumbing fixtures if they are found to contain lead
