We have seen a beautiful stretch of weather in May so far, and summerlike temperatures, as well. It's the very warm temperatures that have many flocking to lakes to do their favorite water activities... fishing, boating, kayaking and much more. This time of year, you need to use extra caution while on the water with lake water temperatures still on the chilly side.

What You Need To Know

  • Warmer highs have many flocking to the lakes

  • Early fishing and boating seasons have begun

  • Lake water temperatures are still chilly this time of year

  • Take extra precautions to stay safe this time of year

I was talking 70s and even 80s past several days last week, but for folks who live on the shores of Lake Ontario, it's a very different forecast. Water temperatures for parts of Lake Ontario are still in the 40s. So, as you travel from a warm inland spot and make your way to the lake, you will find you need to dress much warmer before going out on the water.

Early season fishing is underway and anglers need to be dressed in layers and wind-protective gear when out on the water. Winds crossing over these cooler lake waters make for chilly conditions and you should be ready to bundle up. Boaters who have their boats in the water and are traveling at higher speeds will find it gets chilly quickly, even on a sunny day.

When kayaking this time of year, it is even more important to be prepared. When temperatures on the water are this cold, it may be better to kayak on a smaller waterway or wait until things warm up. If you are more experienced, wearing a full wet suit provides protection if you fall in the water.
