We’ve come off a hot stretch in Syracuse after last week's summery heat and humidity. In fact, temperatures through the first half of June were above average for this time of year.
Syracuse experienced its first heat wave of 2021 from June 5-7. A heat wave is defined as three or more consecutive days with a temperature of 90 or higher.
The high temperatures during this three-day stretch were 93, 93 and 94. In fact, the high of 93 on Sunday, June 6, set a new record for the date. The high of 94 on Monday, June 7, tied that day's record.
Our first heat wave of 2021 came earlier than our first heat wave of 2020. Last year, the first heat wave in Syracuse was June 20-23.
While this year’s first heat wave came earlier than last year's, it’s by no means the earliest on record. The earliest heat wave in Syracuse occurred from May 16-18, 1962.
We’ve already had six days with temperatures of 90 or above in 2021 in Syracuse. At this point last year, we only had two days of 90 or higher.
You may remember that the summer of 2020 was a hot and dry one, though. In fact, we had 21 days with temperatures of 90 degrees or greater in Syracuse.
The summer of 2020 tied for the third-warmest on record in Syracuse. Only time will tell how the summer of 2021 stacks up to that.
