Vanessa Richards received her bachelor's degree in meteorology from SUNY Oswego and is no stranger to the changeable weather of our area. She grew up in the small town of Moravia just south of Syracuse and has spent her whole life watching the seasons change and the weather activity here in Central New York.
Her passion for weather was fueled by her fascination with tornadoes (and the movie Twister) from a very young age. She fulfilled her dream to see a tornado when she spent a few weeks in “Tornado Alley” chasing twisters with her fellow classmates at SUNY Oswego. Vanessa also teaches part time to students there to prepare them for their journey into the career of broadcast meteorology.
At Spectrum News, Vanessa wakes up early to provide our viewers the detailed forecast they need to know as they are about to begin their busy days. She typically spends her days in the weather center preparing the forecast, but you can see her out and about in the area covering storm damage, heavy snowfall, or having some fun at local parks or sporting events. Aside from forecasting for Central New York, you can see Vanessa in her weekly pet segment Your New Best Friend, where local animal shelters bring adoptable pets in hopes of finding them their forever home. Helping shelter animals is another lifelong passion of hers.
When Vanessa is not forecasting the weather, she loves to be outside hiking, running, or biking. Her favorite spot to get away is right in our back yard, the beautiful Finger Lakes Wine Trails! She spends much of her free time with her husband Matt and her small farm of adopted pets: two cats, Fergie and Stewie, and two dogs Ralph and Sysco. Sysco was the first ever guest on her segment Your New Best Friend! Watch for Vanessa's Weather on the 1s reports mornings on Spectrum News.
