Nestled in the triangle between Sweet Road, State Route 173 and Troop K Road sits Three Falls Woods.

The first thing you’ll see and hear if you come in on the 173 side are the Staircase Falls, the Tall Twins, and the Cascades. Erin Dupree is an avid hiker, but this is the first time she and her family has visited these 175 acres of land.

What You Need To Know

  • Three Falls Woods is a lesser-known hiking trail in Manlius

  • It has three waterfalls, which are named The Staircase Falls, The Tall Twins and The Cascades

  • The loop is 2.7 miles and runs through several different paths, boulders, trees and cliffs

“We’ve done a ton, actually. We did some of the Adirondack 46’ers, and our backyard, and this trail," Dupree said.

“I didn’t even know it existed. I think if maybe there was a sign out there, more people would know about it, but it’s also nice when there’s not a lot of people on the trail," said Cory Lynn, a hiker.

After stopping in at the falls, the woods turn into a maze of paths, and on those paths, if you look hard enough, there’s wildlife everywhere.

“There’s lots to explore, but in the spring, when the water is running," Dupree said.

It’s true that the waterfalls are a little dried up in the hot summer months, but that doesn’t mean there are no other things to check out along the trail – like the trees, which according to Zada and Zoryana, Erin's daughters, are solid climbing trees. There's also a pond that’s right near the Sweet Road entrance.

On the way to that pond, the girls talked about why hiking during a pandemic is such a fun activity.

“Because you’re outside and it’s good exercise," Zada said.

“Because you don’t have to sit inside," added Zoryana.

Once they get to the pond, it’s time to circle back. Overall, the loop runs about 3 miles.

Even though the girls were a bit tired, they still made a few stops on the way to the car, like stopping and playing with a vine that seemed to be hanging out of nowhere.

So will there be a return trip?

“I don’t see why not. This is a nice trail," Lynn said.
