ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Millions of Americans are traveling this Thanksgiving, filling highways and airports as they head to celebrate with loved ones. With travel nearing pre-pandemic levels, experts emphasize preparation and patience for the journey ahead.
According to AAA, travel numbers are at a record high this year, showing a significant increase despite inflation. Nearly 6 million people are expected to fly, indicating that rising costs haven’t deterred holiday plans. However, most travelers — more than 80% — will be driving at least 50 miles to their destinations.
The busiest travel days are typically the Wednesday afternoon before Thanksgiving. To avoid delays, AAA strongly recommends traveling early in the morning.
“Nearly 80 million people. That’s up 2% from last year and well beyond where we were pre-pandemic. So we are looking at record travel once again this year,” said Mark Gruba, communications specialist for AAA.
For those traveling by car:
- Inspect your vehicle before hitting the road
- Pack an emergency kit with essentials like water, blankets and a first-aid kit
- Leave early to avoid traffic congestion
For air travelers:
- Arrive early to allow time for long security lines
- Pack a carry-on bag to bypass baggage claim delays
- Download your airline's app to stay updated on flight status and potential delays
Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel times of the year, and with so many people on the move, patience becomes just as important as preparation.
