With so much rain and limited places for it go, homeowners are seeing a lot of flooding and property damage in Central New York.

Some residents of Cross Lake say they can’t drive to their houses and are having to use boats to get access to their homes.

They realize there has been a lot of rain in a short period of time, but they place some of the blame on the New York State Canal Corporation for their properties flooding. They want the state to close the water control structures at Cayuga Lake to stop all flow into Cross Lake until the rain subsides and their roads are clear.

The NYS Canal recognizes that Cross Lake is the bottleneck for the canal system, but emphasizes they have to manage the entire canal system in an equitable manner. They assert one of the biggest issues is how flat Central New York is that creates the flooding issues. This causes the water to move slowly through the region and out to Lake Ontario. Other regions have more drastic elevations, and the water can move quickly away from overwhelmed bodies of water.

The Canal Corporation also says there have been flooding issues for the Finger Lakes, Seneca River, Oswego River and Oneida River in recent days.

They are mitigating substantially less water from Cayuga Lake than they are through Baldwinsville to ease the water levels at Cross Lake.
