SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse is one step closer to a pilot program for clearing snow from some of the city's sidewalks. City hall has an agreement with JSK Snow Services, but the common council held off from approving the contract, Tuesday. Councilors say they need more time to review the contract and the company.

The proposal says JSK Snow Services will clear sidewalks along 20 miles of city roads whenever there is at least three inches of snow.

The program would run from early February through April and cost no more than $170,000, but there are questions about the city's liability and the contractor's ability to handle the workload.

"I'll tell you right now, I'm supportive of this plan, but I did want to give the other councilors time to review all of the facts they learned today,” said Michael Greene, Syracuse Common Councilor At-Large. “So I would expect they would use that time to do their research on the company, on the liability issues, on the operational plan."

The common council is scheduled to vote on the proposal at a special session on Friday. If passed, the program could begin as early as February 1st.
