It's good for kids to read, but many schools around New York state are off for winter break this week. That means many families are looking for things to do with their kids.

A winter hike at state parks could be the perfect family activity. Other options include snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

The New York State Office of Parks Recreation and Historic Preservation offered some advice on how to enjoy winter fun safely.

"Do your research," said Declan Hennelly. "If you are in the cold weather, make sure your kids are dressed properly so that they are warm enough, but not too warm so they are cold later. Wear the proper footwear. If you are going hiking, always make sure you have a map and you know where you are going and you will be home before dark."
