It's a big week in Madison County if you’re into antiques and collectibles.
You’ll find a few thousand dealers and vendors set up along Route 20 this week as part of Madison-Bouckville Antique Week.
John Mancino, the Madison-Bouckville Promotions president, developed a love for antiques about 13 years ago. His love for classic cars led him to start collecting old garage and motor company signs.
“One day we were driving through Bouckville, and I found a house for sale here, and I bought it. And within three years, we bought this antique store and I’ve run it ever since,” he said.
John’s store sits on the Route 20 corridor in Bouckville. For the past 50 years, the area has been home to the Madison-Bouckville Antique Show, which later became Antique Week.
Madison County tourism officials estimate between 40,000 and 60,000 people will visit the event throughout the week.
“It started in ‘72 with probably 10 or 12 vendors with a little air strip up the road, and it’s turned into … we have 2,200 vendor spaces right now,” Mancino said.
Mancino said the operator of the antiques show was ready to stop in 2010 after a long, successful run. That’s when Mancino formed Madison-Bouckville Promotions, which helped keep it going.
“Me and a couple of businessmen got together and went up and down the street and talked to everybody that had stores, restaurants and diners, and we formed this non-profit to continue the legacy of the show,” Mancino said.
Aside from his store, John owns more than six acres of land between Madison and Bouckville where he’s renting more than 200 spaces to vendors this week. You’ll likely find him helping facilitate the event to make sure everything goes smoothly.
“If you enjoy what you do, you never work a day in your life. So I enjoy what I do here. It’s fun, it helps the community; it helps all of us. And we all work together,” he said.
Antique Week will continue through this Sunday in both Madison and Bouckville. Organizers said the weekend tends to draw the biggest crowds. You can find dealers and vendors spread out along Route 20, including 13 show fields.
