Summer travel season is back, but with gasoline prices reaching upwards of $5 for most regions around the Empire State, it's getting tougher to stick to budgets. While fuel may have gotten more expensive, there are plenty of nearby attractions to enjoy on just a tankful from the city of Syracuse.

Spectrum News 1 has put together some gas-friendly getaways around New York state for the whole family to enjoy this summer.

On our first stop of the series, we're heading up north to Clayton and the Thousand Islands region.

One-Way Trip to Clayton from Syracuse

Travel time: 1hr 25min, 90.5 miles

Fuel economy: 25mpg, 3.6 gallons

At $5 per gallon: $18.20

Full trip: $36.20

Clayton is a quaint village surrounded by the Saint Lawrence River where you can take advantage of boating, kayaking or fishing.

A great option in Alex Bay are the Uncle Sam Boat Tours, which depart daily. Those tours will give you a relaxing ride by landmarks like Boldt Castle, or shuttle you in for a tour of the castle and its boathouse.

If you're with the kids, there's at least a few options for miniature golfing and go-karts in the area, while adults may want to visit places like the Clayton Distillery. There's also several little shops with unique gifts and visitor-favorite restaurants, whether you're looking for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

This year marks a special year for the Village of Clayton as 2022 marks its 150th anniversary. A number of special events are scheduled to highlight that anniversary taking place on Saturday, August 13.

If you're looking to take a trip to Clayton this week, this Thursday you can take advantage of the free concert series at 6:00 p.m. in Frink Park. Coyote Moon Vineyards just started their summer wine cruises on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

There will also be fireworks in Clayton at dusk on July 3rd to celebrate Independence Day.
