The SUNY Oswego’s men’s hockey team’s win over Brockport on Friday night was the 1,000th in program history. Another win for the school came just off the ice.
SUNY Oswego’s television station WTOP-10 aired its first all-women’s broadcast — both calling the game on air and doing the behind-the-scenes work — of the game Friday night.
Oswego senior Natalie Barden has been part of WTOP-10 since she was a freshman.
“I started getting involved with sports when I was a junior,” she said. “I always wanted to start a little sooner, but I think I was a little bit intimidated by kind of a more male-dominated space. So I'm so happy that I had some other women to kind of show me that I could do it, too.”
Barden, a producer, and announcer Jolie Santiago decided it was time to give women more representation in a sports broadcast.
“I'm doing color commentating. This is actually my first time doing it live on camera, so I'm very excited. Sports has always been something I've wanted to pursue,” said broadcaster Gabby Giglia.
“We're making history,” said analyst Sydney Selleck, “and I can tell you for a fact there [have] never been three women up on this perch before.”
