Major golf is back in Rochester for the first time since 2019 with the return of the PGA Championship. While there will be no Tiger Woods this time around, there’s still a lot to root for, including two former champs. One will be making his Oak Hill debut.
PGA Championship week at Oak Hill is underway with the biggest names in golf on the course in Rochester Monday for the first practice round of the week. Players like Rory McElroy, Jon Rahm and, of course, 2022 PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas, who's getting his first taste of Oak Hill.
“Just what I heard about the course is that it’s a tough course,” Thomas said. “It’s the Northeast. I love the way the courses look up here, just how the definition of the fairway to the rough and the cuttings of the bunkers. And I love the square, kind-of sharp edges on the greens.
While this is Thomas' first time at the course at Oak Hill, there are plenty of golfers in the field who have played there before, including Shaun Micheel who won it all in 2003.
“And when I get on the property I know there’s been a lot of changes,” Micheel said. “[Architect Andrew Green] has done a fantastic renovation. But to me it looks the same. And I remember a lot of that Sunday 20 years ago. So, it’s fun. But I’m glad to be here. And I’m actually playing pretty well. I mean, my chances of winning are less than they were in 2003, but that’s OK.”
Micheel also played at Oak Hill in 2019 on the Champions Tour.
Practice rounds continue Tuesday and Wednesday with action getting underway Thursday.
