His name is Renell "II" Cummings, but around Colgate, you don't hear him called that much. Around here, he's known simply as "Nelly."

But, he's not the first.

"My dad's Nelly, he's the first Nelly," said Raiders' senior Nelly Cummings during a recent practice. "I'm Nelly, two. 'Is your son going to be Nelly, III?' He might be, I don't know yet."

Hey, when you're the big man on campus, you can have them call you just about anything you want.

And almost no one calls him Renell anymore.

"Only my mom, when she's mad at me," admits the almost-23-year old Cummings, "and my coach calls me [that]. That's it."

Nelly also goes by "Agent Zero," thanks to that jersey number.

"Agent Zero puts me in game mode," said Cummings. "When Agent Zero is activated, I'm in the mode."

But, of all the nicknames, the one he won't answer to is, 'the next Jordan Burns', and not because he doesn't love him.

"That's my guy, man, for sure," Cummings said with a smile.

And not because their games, or even hairstyles, aren't similar.

"That was my roommate for the whole time I was here and, literally, my brother," he continued. "We did everything together."

No, you see, the reason is because Nelly is perfectly fine with being Nelly, and his coach couldn't agree more.

"He knows what he's capable of as a player," said Colgate coach Matt Langel. "But, he's really not out to prove anything to anyone."

"His [Burns'] legacy here speaks for itself, but I'm my own person," added Cummings. "I have to be able to embrace that, and really come into my own."

Coming to his own, meaning, making more noise on the floor this year, with his game, and his voice.

"Gotta be more vocal this year," said the fifth-year senior and Raiders' leading scorer in the early part of this season. "Assuming the leadership position, you've got to be as vocal as you can be."

But being a leader also means being a leader in the locker room, which includes personal hygiene.

"He doesn't cut his toenails," revealed graduate guard Jack Ferguson with a wry grin. "So, it's kind of the joke of the locker room, that 'Nelly, put your socks on, put your shoes on; we don't want to be seeing those things.' "

"No truth to that!" exclaimed Cummings in his own defense. "Don't listen to that, there's no truth to that. We should de-shoe it, I should show them. I cut them! I cut them, so, there's no truth to that at all."

Which is too bad, because 'Nails' would have made another good nickname.
