SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- In its 75-year history, Le Moyne college has never had a Black head coach until now. When Mary Grimes came out to be introduced as the 6th women's basketball coach in program history, she was met with a round of applause during the full-circle moment.

She stood in front of her former coach, Gina Castelli, and thanked her for "taking a chance on this girl from Detroit." Grimes played for Castelli at Siena, helping the Saints to an NCAA tournament berth in 2001. The theme is winning for Grimes. Between her playing days and time as an assistant with Le Moyne, Albany, Syracuse and Xavier, she has made 12 postseason appearances.

She talked a lot about her firsts, like her first America East title and her first NE-10 championship, but being the first Black coach in Phins history still hasn't quite sunk in yet.

"It's just an unbelievable thing. It just speaks to the culture of being the chance. When they say it, they're actually putting it into practice. It's really exciting. I still don't think it's hit me yet, but it's unbelievable. I'm honored," Grimes said.
