It’s the most popular sport in the world — the game of soccer.

It also happens to be Musa Nzirnwo’s favorite sport. And with foot work like his, it’s easy to see why Musa is one of the best amateur soccer players in Central New York.

But Musa’s story is far from typical.

Ten years ago, Musa immigrated to the United States from a refugee camp in the Congo. It was during his younger years that Musa’s life would change. He is actually missing part of his left leg.

“When I was back in the Congo and I was young, I kicked a grenade and it blew up in front of me," he said.

And despite losing his leg in the explosion, Musa’s outlook on life and his love of soccer has never changed.

While he’s a man of few words, a smile is evident underneath his mask as he and his best friend, Michael, practice one-on-one.

"When I am playing with my friends, it keeps me in shape. And we always have fun," he said.

All that practice is paying off for Musa. While many have seen Musa play with his prosthetic, it’s even more impressive without it. In the sport of amputee soccer, Musa just so happens to star.

Just like his favorite player, Cristiano Ronaldo, will represent Portugal at the World Cup, Musa will represent the United States in the Amputee Soccer World Cup. It will be a moment that means the world to him.

"It’s amazing because that's all I ever wanted to do. Me playing with the people that look like me, using the crutches just like me. It’s way easier for me to do it. I enjoy it," he said.

The Amputee Soccer World Cup begins in 2022. Until then, you can bet Musa will keep practicing his game.
