For the first time since September of 2019, the Syracuse Mets played a baseball game.

From start to finish, opening day was special at NBT Bank Stadium.

The Mets celebrated essential workers before the game because they have played such a huge role during the COVID-19 pandemic.

It was a surreal moment as the fireworks went off during the national anthem, which was sung by an essential worker. With fans in the stands, it felt like for the first time in a long time, things are going back to normal.

The Syracuse Mets got the scoring started, courtesy of Martin Cervenka in the 3rd inning. He nailed a solo shot into the new "Bullpen Bar" in left field. After that, an error by the RailRiders led to a 2-0 lead for Syracuse.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre got those runs back, thanks to a two-run homer by Socrates Brito in the 4th, but fortunately for Syracuse, the RailRiders weren't done making mistakes.

In the 5th inning, Nick Nelson threw not one, but two wild pitches in a row to score two Mets players. That lead was enough for Syracuse to cruise through the next four innings with what ended up being a 5-2 win.

At the end of the game, the first fireworks show of many got underway in center field, giving fans even more to celebrate.
