As Baldwinsville native Luke Tuch prepares to hear his name called in this week's 2020 NHL Draft, he recalled his most distinct memory of when his older brother, Alex, was picked 18th overall, six years ago, by the Minnesota Wild.

"At around pick 13 or 14, he had to go to the bathroom so badly," Luke said, chuckling. "He ran up the stairs, and we're just like, 'What is he doing? He could be picked next!' He was definitely nervous, and when he got picked, it was a sigh of relief, for sure."

What You Need To Know

  • Baldwinsville native Luke Tuch is expecting to hear his name called in the 2020 NHL Draft happening tonight and Wednesday night

  • Luke's older brother, Alex, was the 18th pick of the 2014 Draft, and currently plays for the Las Vegas Golden Knights
  •
  • Luke is planning to play at least his freshman season at Boston University

  • The first round of the draft is tonight, with rounds two through seven to follow on Wednesday

Luke plans to park himself much closer to the bathroom Tuesday and Wednesday as he and his family, including Alex, gather to watch this year's virus-delayed, virtual draft. He said there's a chance he could go in the first round, but Luke is projected to go somewhere around pick No. 50, midway through the second round, on Wednesday.

Whichever team drafts him, though, will have to wait. Luke is just beginning his freshman year at Boston University, and said he's planning on playing for the Terriers for at least one season, possibly two, like his brother did across town at Boston College.

"Definitely set on BU, I'm right here on campus," he said. "I don't have a timetable yet [for when he plans to turn pro], but, we'll see what the team says that picks me. I think it's based on your development, and whenever you're ready, they'll take you."

Growing up next to former Buffalo Sabre Tim Connolly, Luke has a lifelong connection with that club, but said getting drafted by any team would be a "special moment." You might think that being picked by his brother's team, Las Vegas, would be the dream scenario, because he and Alex would have a chance to be teammates for the first time.

However, Luke admits, he'd prefer to stick with the sibling rivalry.

"I've thought about playing with him, but, actually, more against him," said Luke, who's six years younger than Alex. "We had a backyard ice rink, and we'd always go against each other. I mean, anything to get the upper hand on my brother."

Just like six years ago, the brothers will be side-by-side Tuesday night and possibly Wednesday night, waiting for another Tuch to be taken. While Luke said it would probably be more exciting to attend an in-person draft, he's grateful to be able to watch with his family.

"I've been looking forward to this for quite some time now," he said. "I've worked my whole life up to this moment."

He's also looking forward to at least hearing his name announced, and then immediately donning the hat of his new team. Don't worry, he's prepared, because the NHL has already sent Luke all 31 teams' hats. And what will he do with the other 30?

"I have no idea, people have been asking for them. I think that that's a pretty cool collection, if you ask me," he said. "Hearing my name called, hugging my parents, and putting on the hat is going to be special."
