Syracuse, New York – August 12, 2019

In a Press Conference that was held at the Hall of Fame Showcase in Drivers Village in Cicero, the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame in conjunction with Team of Honor Sponsor The Romano Auto Dealerships today announced the recipient of this year’s Team of Honor that will be recognized for its outstanding achievements at the 33rd  Annual Hall of Fame Dinner that will take place on Monday, October 28th at 7pm at the Oncenter in Syracuse.

Hall of Fame Board member, Bob Snyder, and Hall of Fame President, Joe Janowski, made the announcement that this year’s Team of Honor will be the 2003 and 2004 Marcellus High School Girls Soccer teams.  These teams won back to back state championships and had a combined record of 46-2-2 over the two year period.

Coach Laurie Updike’s 2003 and 2004 teams had identical 23-1-1 records.

The 2003 Class B State Champions came from behind in the snow to defeat Alden 4-2 in their semi-final matchup, and then won the state crown by besting Oneonta 1-0 in the overtime final.  The finals shutout was one of five in seven post-season games and the 16th overall for the season.

The 2004 run to the State Championship included a semi-final 2-1 overtime win over Babylon in the semi-finals and was culminated by a 6-0 win over Fredonia in the finals.

The 2003 team was led by two 1st team All-State players – both juniors -  forward Jenna Farneti and midfielder Jocie Jankowski.  Farneti was also the State Class B Tournament MVP.  Coach Updike was named as the Class B Coach of the Year.

The senior-laden 2004 team was led by three 1st team All-State players – Farneti, who was the NYS Player of the Year, Jankowski, and forward Amy Ware.

Six players from the ’03-’04 teams played collegiately – Candy Hofmann (’03, Syracuse), Farneti (’04, Duquesne), Jankowski (’04, Nazareth), Ware (’04, Syracuse), Alyssa MacLachlan (’04, St. John Fisher), and Katie Zimmerman (’04, Lynchburg).  It should be noted that Farneti scored 100 goals during her Marcellus career.
