The five suspects charged with murder in the death of Sam Nordquist, a 24-year-old transgender man from Minnesota who was found dead last week in Yates County, were initially set to go before a judge Wednesday.
However, the Ontario County District Attorney's Office announced Tuesday that a grand jury voted to indict those suspects on at least one felony charge each.
Authorities say Precious Azuaga, 38, of Canandaigua, Jennifer Quijano, 30, of Geneva, Kyle Sage, 33, of Rochester, Patrick Goodwin, 30, of Canandaigua and Emily Motyka, 19, of Lima have all been charged with murder in the second degree in connection with Nordquist's death.
They will return to county court once the indictment is filed.
Meanwhile, investigators are still working to determine the exact cause of Nordquist's death.
Investigators say they executed a search warrant of Room 22 at Patty's Lodge in the town of Hopewell, Ontario County Thursday, where they learned the details of Nordquist's death.
A vigil was held at a church in Ontario County on Tuesday to support Nordquist's family.
New Yorkers shocked by his killing came together to honor his memory.
"There are many, many, many ways to respond to this sort of tragedy and the energy it elicits in community," said Rev. Colin Pritchard of the Presbyterian Church in Geneva. "It is a time to honor Sam's life. It is a time to recognize the grief that is elicited. There is a time to acknowledge the horror of what took his life from us. And some of those pieces that exist in our society still."
