The Jennings Creek wildfire is now more than 90% contained, according to officials, and in the clearest sign of progress made, Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus issued an executive order Wednesday rescinding its state of the emergency.
Firefighters continued to work on putting out hot spots, and that was expected to continue for at least another week. New York Air National Guard helicopters continued bucket drops Wednesday to further saturate the perimeter of the operation as crews dug along the area to mix water with soil and extinguish hot spots.
State Park Police said Wednesday morning that overnight work took the fire's control percentage from 40% to 75%.
Neuhaus said Wednesday afternoon that county officials had determined that extending the county's emergency declaration was no longer necessary. The declaration had included closing Greenwood Lake schools, which reopened on Tuesday, and suspended travel in certain areas.
Officials are asking New Yorkers to continue to abide by the statewide burn ban. Heavy rain this week is also expected to lead to some soil erosion in the burn area.
