When you hear a fire truck coming down the street, there's a good chance it's full of volunteers. As part of a statewide effort, many fire departments are hosting events looking for new recruits. Don Simons has been suiting up with the Lansing Fire Department for a decade.

"It’s really important for people to do this for the community and it’s a way that you can give back and have enjoyment at the same time," said Simons.

What You Need To Know

  • RecruitNY is encouraging fire houses to hold open houses this weekend

  • There are more than 1,700 volunteer departments in New York

  • Whether you want to be inside a burning building or in an administrative role, there's a way you can help

But it takes more than just him to respond to a fire. That's why they're looking to increase membership.

"We need all kinds of people from high school students on up to people that are retired, we'll find something for you to do," said Simons.

They're always looking for more volunteers, not just to put out fires.

"Administrative duties, and they can help us out if we're at the scene of a long fire, said Simons. “Let's say going on many hours they'll bring some refreshments and water and keep us going.

All weekend departments across New York are holding events like this one to get new people involved

"If we get two members out of it, great. Its two more people in the door to help do the work. If we get 10, we're going to be beyond ecstatic," said Lansing Fire Chief Brad George. "We provide all the training, all the equipment. It’s a pretty cool thing, I've been doing it for 29 years so once you get the bug, it’s hard to get rid of it.
