The Madison County sheriff is ruling the death of 19-year-old Elizabeth Garrow-McDonald a homicide.
"It's horrible, everyone's sick about it,” Sheriff Todd Hood said.
Garrow-McDonald was the mother of a 1-year-old and had another child on the way.
Her body was located Sunday, around a half mile from the Dunkin’ in Canastota where she was last seen Wednesday. The sheriff says the Onondaga County medical examiner found multiple stab wounds.
"We're all behind this 100 percent in law enforcement, and everybody that's here, the search and rescue people,” Hood says, “We want justice to be done here. We want fairness, we want truth and to bring this case to a conclusion, and to hold the people responsible for this accountable."
No one has been charged yet in the homicide. Garrow-McDonald’s husband, George McDonald Jr., is currently in custody on a probation violation.
Hood says he is a person of interest in the case and has invoked his right to an attorney, as the investigation continues.
"The investigation was for the missing person initially, now we're collecting evidence, moving forward with that, to put the best case forward possibly for this investigation so that justice can be done in this case,” the sheriff explains.
Officials are also urging social media users to stop spreading false information about the case.
"What I would say to all those people putting these things on social media, please stop. You're not helping the investigation, and you're hindering the investigation by putting things out that are wildly inaccurate,” said Robert Mascari, Madison County chief assistant district attorney.
The sheriff says law enforcement is continuing to follow leads that come in.
Garrow-McDonald’s family mourned her loss Sunday, and neighbors came together for a candlelight vigil in Canastota that evening.
