A daughter is demanding change at a nursing home in Rome after her mother, who’s a patient there, took to social media to voice her concerns.

  • A patient at the Grand Rehabilitation and Nursing at Rome shared a video on Facebook outlining alleged mistreatment

  • She says staff did not come and check her foot and ankle, which was in significant pain

  • Her daughter is hoping the viral video will shed light on some of the facility's alleged issues

RaeJean Wallace shared a video on Facebook last week, detailing alleged mistreatment at the Grand Rehabilitation and Nursing at Rome. It’s since been viewed more than 25,000 times.

"I knew she was having a very bad night, started scrolling through Facebook and watched the video. Obviously, I was in tears,” says her daughter, Ruth.

In the video, RaeJean is having foot and ankle pain, and says she asked for someone to check on her around 7 o’clock.

"Here it is after midnight right now, going to 12:30 at night, I still have not seen anybody to look at my foot,” she said in the video.

Her daughter says she has a cardiovascular disease and that the Grand was supposed to wrap her legs for treatment.

"My mom's legs have not been wrapped one time since she entered the facility. My mom's legs are the biggest they've ever been. She probably has well over 50-75 pounds of fluid,” Ruth said.

And there have been more alleged incidents in her time there.

"My mom was served maggots in her cup, she's been served in her food. This list goes on and on. My mom went seven weeks without a shower,” her daughter says.

RaeJean was brought to the Grand for short-term rehab care to gain mobility in her legs. The plan was to have her there for six to eight weeks, but it’s been nearly a year.

Her daughter hopes the now viral video will bring attention to some of the facilities supposed issues.

"My mom's story, it's bad, it's terrible, but there's some out there that are far worse than even hers," Ruth said. "I want to shed some light on it. I want the Grand to pay for what's happened to my mom and all these people; these people are being neglected."

Ruth is planning a protest outside the nursing home Thursday.

Spectrum News reached out to the Grand’s corporate and Rome locations for a statement, but hasn’t received a response yet.

The State Department of Health provided the following statement in regards to the video: “The safety and wellbeing of nursing home residents is of paramount importance to the Department of Health. The Department has received these allegations.  As they focus on individual residents and health conditions, we will refrain from further comment outside of the context of a completed investigation.”

The statement also includes information for individuals who have a complaint about a nursing home. They’re asked to contact the state’s Centralized Complaint Intake at 1-888-201-4563.
