With the 4th of July on the horizon, some towns have opted out of doing fireworks due to the crowds they bring, but Oswego said they have figured out a way to do this safely.

“While we can’t have our great July 4th parade, which is huge in the city of Oswego, we thought it was still important to have something to celebrate the 4th of July,” said Billy Barlow Oswego mayor.

Usually, the fireworks are shown over the harbor but because of social distancing, new measures and a new location are now in place.

“We thought we could actually pick a location where people could actually view fireworks either from their cars or outside their vehicles,” said Barlow.

The fireworks will be over the river, set off from the Railroad Pedestrian Bridge. Mayor Barlow said the riverwalk will help provide a lot of space.

“When we close Utica Street bridge we will allow people to go on the bridge, on foot and socially distance there,” said Barlow.

“I’m very happy thank you,” said an Oswego resident. “Yeah it’s been pandemic the last few weeks but we are going to make the best of it, we are going to get over it,” he continued.

“Most people are excited to have fireworks and do it safely,” said Barlow.

He said there will be enforcement from police officers if social distancing isn’t respected.

“If we see any large groups of people forming we will try to educate and inform them,” he said.

If you plan to attend, the mayor asks people to stay within their own groups for everyone’s safety. The fireworks will launch at 9:45 on Sunday, July 5.
