Just this past weekend, there was a stabbing at a Hanukkah celebration in New York, a shooting at a church in Texas, and a startling spray-painted message on a church in California.
"It's a bad situation when you have to have incidents occur in your churches,” said Daren Jaime, People's A.M.E. Zion Church pastor. “Churches are known as safe spaces."
But these places of worship have been under attack.
"When those safe spaces are violated, it leaves an uneasiness amongst congregation, pastor, people and community,” said Jaime.
The threats continue to rise, especially this holiday season.
Jaime said this time of year may not put everyone in good spirits.
"For other people it's depressing,” said Jaime. “While everyone is walking around saying happy, happy, or merry, merry, it's not for everyone. And those persons may act in ways that are unseemly," he said.
Jaime emphasizes it's important to take the appropriate steps to keep everyone safe and secure.
"I think all of us know it's necessary thing to have cameras in our churches or houses of worship,” said Jaime.
He also has security at his services.
"Even when there's not visible security, you got congregations and houses of worship who have law enforcement, retired law enforcement who will be present if anything happens,” said Jaime.
He also informs his congregation about protocols in case of an emergency.
"But our job on Sunday and when we gather is really to worship and to worship without worry,” said Jaime.
He'll continue to encourage all to follow their faith, despite the hate.
There is a service every Sunday at 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. The church has more than 31 ministries.
