The man suspected of robbing a bank in Colonie last week appeared in court Tuesday — and was released on his own recognizance, a fact police highlighted in a press release.

Christopher Seamans, who was arrested Saturday in connection with a Friday afternoon robbery at Pioneer Savings Bank on Central Avenue in Colonie, made an appearance in Albany County Court to answer a felony charge. He was released on his own recognizance, according to Colonie Police — which was noted "In light of the interest in the new bail/discovery reform for 2020," a press release read.

Seamans, according to police, has previous convictions for bank robberies in 2005 and 2010, serving time in federal prison for both.

"Happy New Year everyone! Especially happy for our most recent bank robber," the press release concluded.

The major criminal justice reforms eliminating cash bail for most misdemeanor and non-violent felony offenses were passed by the state legislature and signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo. Having survived multiple legal challenges from county executives across the state, they officially take effect Wednesday.
