Trump said in a statement Monday morning he is “honored to nominate Chairwoman Elise Stefanik to serve in my Cabinet as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Elise is an incredibly strong, tough, and smart America First fighter.”
Stefanik’s office did not immediately respond to an email from Spectrum News seeking comment.
As Republican conference chair, Stefanik, 40, is the fourth highest-ranking GOP member in the House. She has represented New York’s 21st Congressional District, which covers much of the northeastern part of the state, since 2015. When she first won at age 30, she became the youngest woman ever elected to Congress at the time.
Initially a Trump critic after he announced he was running for president in 2015, Stefanik has since emerged as one of his most loyal supporters, serving on his impeachment defense team in 2021 and endorsing him even before he launched his 2024 campaign. In November 2023, she filed a judicial ethics complaint against the New York judge handling the Trump Organization’s civil fraud trial.
Stefanik ascended to House conference chair after former Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., began voicing her opposition to Trump following the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol and was voted out of the leadership role.
In Trump’s first administration, Nikki Haley and Kelly Craft served as ambassadors to the U.N.
