In a blue state like New York, it can be tough for a Republican to throw their hat into the ring and win statewide.

In 2022, the GOP’s U.S. Senate candidate, businessman and political commentator Joe Pinion, put up the strongest challenge to Sen. Chuck Schumer since the Democrat was first elected back in 1998.

As Spectrum News 1 prepares for Wednesday night’s U.S. Senate debate between incumbent Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand and Republican challenger Mike Sapraicone, Capital Tonight asked Pinion for some insights into how a candidate prepares for a debate.

The debate airs at 7 p.m. and will be moderated by Spectrum News political anchors Susan Arbetter and Errol Louis. It will take place at the University at Albany.
