The primary school funding formula for public schools in New York is getting a reboot.

The Foundation Aid formula, which has been the vehicle by which lawmakers direct money to school districts based on need, has been the blueprint for education advocates since 2007.  But the formula is 17 years old and requires new inputs and updated data to accurately reflect district need.

It was also created prior to the implementation of the state’s tax cap.

Earlier this year, Gov. Kathy Hochul tapped the Rockefeller Institute to spearhead the overhaul.

Rockefeller Institute President Robert Megna, who previously served as senior vice chancellor and chief operating officer of SUNY System Administration, as well as New York state budget director, discussed challenges to changing the formula with Capital Tonight host Susan Arbetter.
