New Yorkers with disabilities face enormous challenges when it comes to employment. To address some of those issues, in 2022, lawmakers expanded a program called “preferred source contracting” to boost opportunities. But the program will sunset in 2025 unless lawmakers take action.
Capital Tonight spoke with two advocates, Maureen O’Brien, president and CEO of New York State Industries for the Disabled, and Michael Seereiter, president and CEO of the New York Alliance for Inclusion and Innovation, who argued for extending the preferred source contracting law as well as for addressing a perverse incentive that prevents people from earning too much money or they fall off a benefits cliff.
