Nearly 160 years ago, slaves in the last parts of the Confederacy were finally granted their freedom under the Emancipation Proclamation.
The day would be known as Juneteenth, which was commemorated Wednesday with a recently minted federal holiday.
Now, as the nation still struggles with its racial history and getting to true equality, a commission has been set up to study the issue of reparations here in New York. State Assemblymember Michaelle Solages, who sponsored legislation in the Assembly toset up that commission, joined Capital Tonight to discuss the commission and what she hopes to see from the final project.
