The nursing profession is facing multiple challenges.
Inadequate levels of nursing staff are contributing to burnout, leading to fewer nurses. Plus, there’s a shortage of faculty who can teach students nursing.
In 2021, more than 91,000 qualified applicants for bachelors and graduate nursing programs were turned away because of that faculty shortage. And the timing couldn’t be worse: The U.S. has more Americans over 65 than at any other time in history. More people in need, yet fewer people to take care of them.
Annette Wysocki, dean of the University at Buffalo School of Nursing, discussed these challenges with Capital Tonight host Susan Arbetter.
