Five different social media CEOs testified befoer a U.S. Senate committee on child exploitation Wednesday. They were grilled about promoting suicidal ideation, sextortion, harassment, body image issues and more.

One mother and teacher in attendance, Mary Rodee, of Canton, opened up about her experiences. Her son, 15-year-old Riley Basford, took his own life after experiencing social media harassment and extortion.

Rodee says both tech companies and lawmakers have to do more to protect children online.

“I'm disappointed in the big tech CEOs making billions and very clear statistics of the harm being done. And still, Mark Zuckerberg opens by saying there's no scientific connection between children's mental health decline and the social media platforms, and that's perjury," Rodee said. "How are they getting away with this? How are we not holding them accountable for the lies that they're telling?

"And really, it's time for Congress to act. There were still nine senators on that committee today who do not support KOSA."

Several people who lost children to suicide due to issues they say stemmed from social media were present in the hearing room on Wednesday – with lawmakers and the technology execs referencing the families several times throughout. Click here for more on the hearing.
