Republican candidate Jeffrey Lanigan has unseated incumbent Jacqueline Izzo in the race for mayor of Rome.

According to the latest unofficial results from the Oneida County Board of Elections, Lanigan narrowly led Izzo 53% to 47% with all districts reporting.

Izzo on Wednesday afternoon conceded the race to Lanigan.

“After close review with the Oneida County Board of Elections, I agree that there are not enough absentee ballots to change the results of election night," Izzo said in a statement. "I have contacted Mr. Lanigan and congratulated him on his victory in the 2023 election."

It’s the second time Lanigan has ousted Izzo in the 2023 election cycle. He defeated her in the Republican primary race back in June. As a result, Izzo ran on the Conservative Party line and even had the backing of the Rome Democratic Committee.

Izzo has been mayor since 2016 and is the first woman to serve as mayor of the city.

Lanigan is a former member of the Rome Police Department and a lifelong resident of the city.

The city of Utica will also have a new mayor.

Republican Michael Galime defeated Democrat Celeste Friend 63% to 32% in Tuesday’s elections. Conservative Party candidate Bob Cardillo received 5% of the vote.

Galime has been the Utica Common Council president for eight years is also an accomplished musician, recently playing at the Feast of St. Cosmas and Damian.  

Galime is the first Republican elected mayor of Utica since 2003.

Current Mayor Robert Palmieri couldn’t run for re-election because of term limits. 

Also on Tuesday, Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente soundly won re-election.
