Attorney Paul Battisti is projected to be elected the next Broome County district attorney, forging a comeback from four years ago when he narrowly lost the race for the same office.
Battisti, a Republican, defeated the Democrat, former Binghamton Mayor Matt Ryan, with 56% of the vote to Ryan’s 44%, according to the latest unofficial results from the Broome County Board of Elections.
Battisti worked as a defense attorney for nearly 20 years in the Binghamton area. He ran for the DA position in 2019 and won the Republican primary. In the general election, however, Michael Korchak ran on the Libertarian line and beat Battisti by just 122 votes. In a rematch this past June, Battisti beat Korchak in the Republican primary and Korchak did not secure any third-party lines.
Battisti will take office at the end of the year.
