Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon has been re-elected, cruising to a second full term in Tuesday’s elections and will lead Central New York’s most populous county for another four years.

The Republican soundly defeated his Democratic opponent, county legislator Bill Kinne, 64% % to 36%, according to the latest unofficial results from the Onondaga County Board of Elections.

McMahon campaigned heavily on his leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic and last year’s announcement that Micron will invest billions of dollars in the region, bringing a semiconductor plant, thousands of jobs and economic opportunity for many.

After serving as chair of the county legislature, McMahon ascended to the county executive role in 2018 when Joanie Mahoney stepped down to take a job in higher education.

McMahon won a full term in 2019 by 9 points.

McMahon’s re-election continues decades of Republican control of county offices. No Democrat has ever been elected to the post of county executive since the office was created in 1962.

McMahon will be sworn in for another term at the beginning of the year.
