State Republican Party Chair Nick Langworthy has bested Democrat Max Della Pia in the race for New York’s 23rd Congressional District, The Associated Press projected.

Langworthy will fill the Western New York House seat that was vacated by Republican Rep. Chris Jacobs this spring when he decided not to run for re-election.

Langworthy has been the state’s GOP party chair since 2019. He was criticized for remaining in that position during his candidacy for Congress, but he told Spectrum News 1 back in October that he would step down from that role if elected.

A native of the Southern Tier, Langworthy has also served as the Erie County GOP chairman and currently lives in Niagara County.

A staunch supporter of former President Donald Trump, Langworthy defeated former Republican gubernatorial nominee Carl Paladino in a bitter primary battle back in August.

Langworthy will be sworn in on Jan. 3, 2023 as a freshman member of the 118th Congress.
